Heron’s Heart is my spiritual autobiographical blog. I will archive my most recent essays that were written for my undergraduate work at the University of Massachusetts where I am pursuing my degree in Applied Mental Health. I expect to graduate (God willing) in December of 2016. Other creative writings (the past, present and future) will be available here, as well as photographs of my artwork and my adventures.
A spiritual autobiography is a non-fictional memoir format that became popular in seventeenth-century England, but its roots go back even further to the early Christian tradition (1). The form’s original intent was to show an individual’s progress during their spiritual journey from a state of sin to a state of grace in the eyes of God. The style has expanded from the Christian tradition to encompass diverse religious belief systems in the twenty-first century. I feel that a spiritual autobiography is not only about my spirituality but needs to take a holistic approach. Mind, body, and spirit are irrevocably linked, and for my autobiography to be complete, I have to look at the sum of all my parts. I hope you enjoy reading.
